F1 | Giovinazzi focusing on making performance gains in 2021, not concerned by Ferrari juniors
The Italian driver says he is not concerned about the rise of Ferrari juniors, emerging talents of the team’s academy, and them potentially jumping him for a dream F1 drive.
Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott, Robert Schwartzman and Marcus Armstrong, members of Ferrari’s Academy, joined the team’s 2021 lineup, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, in a five-day test at Fiorano last week in preparation for the upcoming season. But Antonio Giovinazzi says he is unfazed about the situation.
Formula 2 reigning champion, Mick Schumacher, will make his F1 debut this year with Haas, but he has already been pinned as a future contender for the dream drive With Ferrari, in spite of not being an opening at the Scuderia until 2023 with the Spaniard signing a two-year deal and the Monegasque contracted through to 2024.
Despite having been overlooked for Sainz for the second seat at Ferrari this year, Giovinazzi reiterates that he is focusing on the upcoming 2021 season and making further improvements at his team, Alfa Romeo. In an interview with Crash.net, Antonio stated that he was not focusing on other people.
“I’m focused on myself, this is what we always do and I try to improve myself and then we will see what will happen. To focus on other drivers is not something that will make myself better, so I just focus on myself.”
While admitting that driving for Ferrari is his ultimate dream, he is remaining focused on the task at hand, which is helping Alfa Romeo move up the grid this year; the team suffered a very disappointing 2020 as they only scored eight points and finished 8th in the Constructors' Championship.
He explained that he knows Carlos and Charles will both be at Ferrari for a few years, and that you never know what is going to happen and that for now he is concentrating in doing well with Alfa Romeo in 2021 and will see what happens for the 2022 season.
“Now I’m racing for Alfa Romeo and I want to do the best job here so far. I’m sure that I’m doing a good job here and then we will see what the future will bring.
“For now, I’m focused to have a good result here and then we will see what will happen. Of course, to have the support of Ferrari is something good for my career as well.”
