Paraphrasing a famous Italian love song, “Some romances don’t end; they do huge turns and then come back.” Williams Racing has officialised the return of Jenson Button to the team. His role will be Senior Advisor: he will work alongside Williams drivers, both official and the academy ones, attending a number of Grands Prix and team events. He will also have media and marketing duties to cover. Sky Sports F1 Uk watchers will be glad to find out that Button will keep his expert analyst role.

Via Williams ‘social media Button has said that he is “incredibly excited to have the chance to come back and help the team as it strives once more for success.” and that he can’t wait for the upcoming season to start. Williams Racing CEO Jost Caputo added, “Bringing Jenson back on board is another positive step to help us move forward as a team both on and off track”.

Jenson Button, who recently turned 41, debuted in F1 with Sir Frank Williams’s approval almost 21 years ago during the 2000 season, after only a season of British F3 in which he replaced Alex Zanardi and had as a teammate Ralf Schumacher. He scored twelve points, became the youngest driver in history to score a point getting a sixth-place at the Brazilian GP and secured an eighth place overall. He competed in F1 for 18 seasons, scoring 15 victories and, in 2009 with Brawn, a World Championship, secured at that same Brazilian GP.

In the last months, Williams’ property has changed, as the Williams family sold the team to US investment firm Dorilton Capital. 2020 season has not been great for the English team, who finished last in the constructor standings, failing to score points. Confirmed 2021 line-up George Russell, who got his first F1 points this year acting as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement for the Sakir GP and 2019 F2 championship runner up Nicholas Latifi will really have to step up their game next year to become regular points contenders, and Button’s guidance will bring much-needed experience to one of youngest F1 line-ups.
