F1 | Kimi Raikkonen vs Antonio Giovinazzi; performance comparison in qualifying and race
After not having the performance they wanted, Alfa Romeo finished in P8 in the constructors' championship but it was not the season they were expecting. We analyze the results that Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi managed to obtain.
The Alfa Romeo season went from low-key to bad like the other Ferrari-powered teams that suffered a major performance drop. Although the position in the constructors' championship was the same as the previous season (8th place), the amount of points was significantly lower, going from 57 pts. (2.71 per race) to 8 pts. (0.47 per race).
An experienced former world champion loved around the world for his particular personality, Kimi "Iceman" Raikkonen, against a young talent, who is completing his second full season in F1, still with a lot to grow, Antonio Giovinazzi.
The comparisons between these two drivers could be unfair, due to the experience of each one, in addition to remembering what it was the previous season where there was a huge dominance from Kimi. But this season turned out to be extremely close between the two Alfa Romeo drivers. Observing from the coldness of the numbers, we will take the qualifying session and the results obtained in the race to know which of the two has achieved a better season.
- Qualifying:
The level of the car was not as expected, the team was in the fight against Haas and Williams to enter Q2 although this task was not easy. Kimi Raikkonen managed to advance to Q2 3 times, during the Spanish Grand Prix, where he was 14th and in Mugello he finished 13th. Antonio Giovinazzi for his part, he also reached Q2 3 times, Nurburgring, Sakhir and Abu Dhabi, every time he was in 14th.
Undoubtedly, the best qualifying session for both was at the Turkish Grand Prix, on a recently resurfaced track with low grip, adding the onset of rain. Under these conditions, both drivers reached Q3 where Kimi was 8th and Giovinazzi was 10th. The two Alfa Romeo drivers had a very close qualifying performance, perhaps surprisingly even, but it was Giovinazzi who edged out Kimi by a total of 9 to 8 in qualifying, although on average both drivers’ qualifying position was 17th.
