F1 | Daniel Ricciardo vs Esteban Ocon; performance comparison in qualifying and race
After finishing as best of the rest last season, Renault was aiming to conclude in P3 in the constructors' championship this year as Ferrari did not have a great season, although, they could not since McLaren and Racing Point also took advantage of this. In this piece, we compare the performance of their two drivers, Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo.
As we have been doing for a few days now, teammate comparisons are an extremely interesting thing to look at. We have to remember that the greatest point of comparison of a driver is his teammate since both drivers have exactly the same car, consequently, any result achieved in that car is possible if you have the same car. Once the 2020 Formula 1 season is over, now is when the official results have already come to light and at MotorLat we have prepared an article to compare two drivers who, personally, I never believed were going to be teammates, we are talking about Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon, both Renault drivers. We will take into account the qualifying session and the race on Sunday so that their respective averages can be calculated in these two sessions.
- Qualifying session and starting race position.
The expectations of the French team were very high after Daniel Ricciardo was already a full year with them and with the young talent that is Esteban Ocon. Finishing best of the rest last year in P4 in the constructors' world championship, Renault was very strong fighting for a good amount of points and even podiums. The fall of Ferrari benefited them as there was one less team to fight with, however and due to many factors, Renault could only reach fifth place in the championship, after Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren and Racing Point. These were the results achieved by its drivers.
In the qualifying session, Daniel Ricciardo strongly outscored his teammate. The Australian driver earned his pass to Q3 a total of 14 times, while the Frenchman advanced 8 times. Ricciardo got a better qualifying position 15 times, while Ocon could only beat him on 2 occasions. We have taken the time to calculate the average difference the two Renault drivers have in each qualifying session by comparing their lap times. With these data we can conclude that Daniel Ricciardo is, on average, 0.257 seconds faster than Esteban Ocon. The best position the former Red Bull driver managed to obtain in the qualifying sessions was fourth (4th) place in one race (during the Belgian Grand Prix), Ocon's best position was fifth (5th) place, also achieved on a single occasion (Styrian Grand Prix). Now, on average, the position that Daniel Ricciardo gets in each qualifying session was 7.7, that is and rounded, 8th place, while the French driver obtained an average position of 9.9, that is, 10th place. We attach a chart so that the understanding of this information is better.

- Main race and starting position.
The race is where the points are given, so the result in this session will determine your position in the drivers’ and constructors’ championship. To begin with, Danny Ric had only one retirement (Austrian GP), either due to accidents or mechanical incidents, while Esteban suffered 4 of these (Styrian, Tuscan, Eifel and Imola Grand Prix). Neither of these drivers won any victories this season, however, the Australian driver was on the podium twice and the French one only once. The best position in which Ricciardo finished was 3rd achieved twice (Eifel and Imola Grand Prix), while Ocon's was 2nd only once (Sakhir Grand Prix). Daniel Ricciardo's average career podium was 6.7, that is, 7th place, while Esteban Ocon's was 8.3, that is, 8th place. Finally, the French driver finished the season in P12 with a total of 62 units, when the Australian driver finished in P5 with 119 points (a difference of 57 points). We attach the chart to improve the understanding.
