F1 | Sebastian Vettel vs Charles Leclerc; performance comparison in qualifying and race
Ferrari did not have a great season as they failed to mantain at least P2 in the Constructors' Championship and in this piece, we compare the performance of their two drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc.
As we have been doing for a few days now, teammate comparisons are extremely interesting and worth looking into. We must remember that the greatest point of comparison of a driver is his teammate since both drivers have exactly the same car, consequently, any result achieved in that car is possible if you have the same car. Once the 2020 Formula 1 season is over, now is when the official results have already come to light and at MotorLat we have prepared an article to compare two drivers who have been very controversial this year, we are talking about Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, both Ferrari drivers. We will consider the qualifying session and the race on Sunday so that their averages can be calculated in these two sessions.
- Qualifying session and starting race position.
Ferrari has been one of the teams that has surprised us the most (badly) this season. After having been for many years in search of the drivers 'and constructors' world championships, in 2020 they were fighting to even achieve Q3 and fight for points with cars like Renault, Racing Point, McLaren, Alpha Tauri, Alfa Romeo, etc. In some races the difference between these two drivers was very abysmal, however, in much of the calendar, these two drivers were always at the same level, although it must be admitted that the Monegasque had better results.
In the qualifying session, Charles Leclerc was the favourite in terms of results. Sebastian Vettel got his pass to Q3 a total of 3 times, while Charles managed to advance to that stage 11 times. The Monegasque driver achieved a better position 13 times, the other 4 were in the hands of the German driver. We have taken the time to calculate the average difference the two Ferrari drivers have in each qualifying session by comparing their lap times. With these data we can conclude that Charles Leclerc is, on average, 0.329 seconds faster than Sebastian Vettel. Another extremely interesting fact is that the best position that Seb managed to obtain in the qualifying sessions was fifth (5th) place in a single time (during the Hungarian Grand Prix), on the other hand, Charles's best position was fourth (4th), achieved in 4 races (British Grand Prix, Eifel, Portugal and Sakhir). Now, on average, the position that Sebastian Vettel gets in each qualifying session was 12.2, that is and rounded, 12th place, while the Monegasque driver had an average position of 8.2, that is, 8th place. We attach a chart so that the understanding of this information is better.

- Race and final position.
The race is where the points are given, so the result in this session will determine your position in the drivers’ and constructors’ championship. For starters, Vettel had a total of 2 retirements, either due to accidents or mechanical incidents, while Leclerc retired 4 times. Neither of these two drivers obtained any victory this season, however, Vettel obtained only 1 podium and Leclerc 2. The best position in which the German pilot finished was 3rd in the Grand Prix of Turkey, while that of the Monegasque was 2nd at the Austrian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel's average race podium was 10.4, that is, 10th place, while Charles Leclerc's was 7th. Finally, Charles Leclerc finished the season in eighth place with a total of 98 points, when Seb finished in thirteenth place with 33 points (a difference of 65 points). This is the chart that will help us to understand the information.
