F1 | Sakhir GP | Esteban Ocon: "It was the best Friday of the season for us"
Renault seems to be one of the strongest teams ahead of the Sakhir Grand Prix and Esteban Ocon enjoyed the performance of his RS20 in today's practice sessions.
Today, December 4, was the first day that the world's fastest cars tested the outer track of Bahrain ahead of the Sakhir Grand Prix. We have to remember that last week was also a race week at the same circuit, however, this weekend, Formula 1 will race for the first time at the Bahrain International Circuit but for its external layout. The first two free practice sessions have already taken place and the circuit is very fast. On this occasion, the Renault team has had an incredible performance compared to its current rivals. We have to remember that the French team is fighting for third place in the constructors' championship against McLaren, Racing Point and Ferrari. On the other hand, Daniel Ricciardo currently occupies fourth place in the drivers' championship, however, in order to maintain it, he will have to perform at 100% since both McLaren and Racing Point have very fast cars on this type of circuit. In the morning session, Esteban Ocon managed to position himself in seventh position with a best time of 55,273 after having ridden for 49 laps, being one of the drivers with the most laps of the session. In the afternoon session, the French Renault driver finished in P4, behind George Russell's Mercedes, Max Verstappen's Red Bull and Sergio Perez's Racing Point. Esteban, after having rolled for 50 laps, set a best time of 54.940, being 0.227 seconds slower than the leader. These were some words from the Renault driver.
“It was a good day for us and probably the best Friday of the season on our side of the garage. We had a good performance in FP1, and we found a bit more in FP2 where we made a step and we’re pleased with that. The long runs in FP2 were decent and I had some battles with some other cars, so that was fun.”
We can listen to him relaxed and he is confident that his RS20 will perform very well in the race. Bahrain is one of the circuits that is best given to the French team, we must remember that in 2019, both cars were in very good positions until, a few laps from the end, both cars had electrical failures and ended in a double DNF.
“It’s promising for tomorrow when we need to put everything together and make it happen. The new track is very technical and very different to last week. We’re on lower downforce and we’re arriving quicker into corners, but I think we’ve adapted quite quickly to it.” The French driver admitted.
Tomorrow is the qualifying session and that is where the starting position of each car is defined. We will see if Renault will be able and capitalize on all the possibilities they currently have and be able to continue fighting for third place in the constructors' championship, since McLaren is the one who has managed to obtain many points in the past race.
