F1 | Red Bull will help Alex Albon to rebuild his confidence on the car
Red Bull is set to help Alex Albon to rebuild his confidence on the team, on the car and on his driving style after having had some bad results in previous races.
Red Bull's second seat has been anything but constant since Daniel Ricciardo's departure in 2019 when the Australian driver decided to join Renault, the team he has stayed with until this season. In 2019 Pierre Gasly was promoted to take the Australian's seat, however the French driver did not perform as expected and mid-season returned to the energy brand's B team and instead Alexander Albon was now promoted to be Max Verstappen's teammate. The Dutch driver does not forgive anything, we have seen him lapping his own teammates on numerous occasions so the simple fact of being his teammate is something that will be against you. Right now, the seat of the British-Thai driver is in danger as he has not delivered the promised results either. Helmut Marko is Red Bull's main avisor and has a reputation for being very drastic when it comes to making decisions regarding his drivers.
When Christian Horner was asked to reflect about Albon’s performance at Imola, he said: “It’s a difficult one for Alex [Albon], because he was in that race with Charles [Leclerc] and Daniel [Ricciardo] all afternoon. Then at the restart, fighting with Perez who was on new tires, he just lost it at the second chicane. So, it was hugely frustrating for him to come away with zero points, and for the team as well. " Horner commented.
"We’ll obviously try and work with him between now and Turkey and build him up again and go again there."
It is something that has been quite common in the last two drivers that the Austrian team has had. Little by little they lose confidence in the car and their driving style, which can be very bad since this is the basis for having a good race, having confidence in the car you are driving. Helmut Marko has commented that, if required, they will wait until Abu Dhabi to make their final decision on the second driver for their team. On the other hand, Albon has shown his frustration with the media.
“It’s one of those races where we spent the whole race behind the other cars. There wasn’t much to do there. Possibly in hindsight we should have stopped when the other did at the end of the race, and of course we were the first cold-tyred car for them to come across so it was always going to be difficult to hold them off. " The Thai-British driver commented.
It should be noted that Albon managed to qualify just 0.396 seconds behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. The Dutchman managed to get more than 1 second out of the Thai in that session, however, Imola suited his car and his driving style well, reducing the advantage that the Dutchman had. Afterwards, Albon was asked if he could push his car further to the limit to reduce the underperformance compared to Verstappen, to which he replied: “I'm already doing that to be honest. It’s not like I’m not doing it already, but of course I’m hanging in there, I’m doing everything I can. It was in retrospect not a bad weekend for me, but we'll focus on Turkey."
