The Portuguese Grand Prix was held on Sunday October 25th of this year. It was the first official Grand Prix to be held at the Portimao circuit, specifically at the International Circuit do Algarve. The race was won by British driver and six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, accompanied by his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, in second place, while Max Verstappen's Red Bull finished in third place. Everything had been handled in the best way, without incidents off the track and with very good logistics, however, there was a person who had not looked at the racetracks for a long time, which made many people speculate a possible purchase of Formula 1.

Greg Maffei is the current boss of Liberty Media, owners of Formula 1. This person does not usually set foot on racetracks, he is not usually present at the Grand Prix, despite the fact that he is the head of the company that owns the category. As we mentioned, Maffei is not a fan of motorsport and has only been seen in very few Grands Prix in the last three years. The Portuguese Grand Prix is not a renowned Grand Prix, such as Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, among others. However, Greg Maffei was present in Portimao, it was a bit strange to notice his presence on the Portuguese track and many have started to make their speculations. We must remember that Chase Carey is still in charge of some meetings, however, there are matters in which the head of Liberty Media himself, which is Greg, is required, this type of matter is of utmost importance for the category and its destination.

Some rumours have been circulating about the cause of his attendance at this Grand Prix, the most logical and "acclaimed" by people is about selling the business. As we know, Formula 1 and motor racing in general, is a sport in which you must have large amounts of money to be able to excel or even enter this world. The current pandemic has caused many companies to lose value in the market and their plans are affected, Formula 1 was no exception. The highest category of motorsports had planned a return on the investment that has been made to promote the future of the sport, however, this has been considerably reduced after the onset of the pandemic. In other words, thanks to this, it will now take much longer for Liberty Media to get more out of the investment made.

The value of Formula 1 has been changing considerably in recent years, in addition to being extremely difficult to calculate due to the different variables that can be presented when making the calculation. Liberty Media came to command of F1 in February 2017, after Bernie Ecclestone was removed from office, on that date, the category's market capitalization was just $ 2.5 billion. Since then, this number has only been increasing and reached its peak in January of this year with a value of $ 10.6 billion dollars. Once the pandemic began, several projects, including the same season, lagged behind, as did the money, this produced a reduction in the capitalization of the $ 4.1 billion category. Subsequently, the category rose again in figures to the amount of $ 8.6 billion dollars. As we have seen, these movements are extremely sensitive, since a bad decision can cause the value of the category to drop considerably. Many people expected that, after the signing of the recent Pact of Concord, the value would increase, but it was the opposite. Today, its current Formula 1 market capitalization is $ 7.7 billion.

These are decisions that have to be analysed very carefully that cannot be made by many people. The presence of Greg Maffei at the Portuguese Grand Prix has made people speculate a possible sale of the category. Liberty Media would be in a silent search for a new buyer of the category, since they cannot allow its value to decrease again. It has been an extremely difficult year for many companies, including the current owner of the category. If Liberty Media decides to sell to Formula 1, they will have financial benefits, the trouble will be that the whereabouts of the category will depend on the new owner, if this does happen.
