F1 | GP Imola | Sergio Perez on Red Bull: “I cannot wait too long”
F1 | GP Imola | The Racing Point driver said he cannot wait too long for Red Bull’s decision on its final drivers line-up for the season-2021.
In September, it became known that Checo Perez is leaving the team, which he has been with for seven years, since the days of Force India.
As the driver says in his official statement, he does not have a plan B. In addition, Checo wants to stay in Formula 1 championship and continue to perform. However, the Mexican did not announce any specific offers from the other teams either.
So, at the moment, of all the possible rumors in the world of drivers’ transfers, there are several options that relate to Perez. First of all is Red Bull team.
Currently Red Bull is weighing up whether or not to retain Alex Albon for the season-2021. If Albon is not retained, then Red Bull has been clear that it will look outside of its young drivers program for a replacement. Thus, the experienced Perez and also Nico Hulkenberg will be the favourites for the Red Bull’s seat.
What advantages does Perez have in this battle? His fresh racing experience, plus sponsorship from Mexico, what makes him an attractive candidate and could be enough to give him the advantage over Nico.
However, Red Bull is in no hurry to make a decision. At the last Grand Prix, in Portugal, Red Bull principal Christian Horner said he was confident that both Hulkenberg and Perez would hang for as long as needed while the outfit decides what it is doing with Albon.
"Well, I think any of those drivers would obviously put Red Bull as a priority over any other seats, so I would imagine that they would wait to see what the decision is," Horner said.
However, Perez, in his turn, said that he cannot wait for too much longer for the team to return with their opinion of the drivers line-up next season. Even despite the high attractiveness of the Red Bull option for the Mexican.
"I think there is a very slim line in there you know," Checo said ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.
"There is a time where you can take the risk, wait, and then see what happens.
"But the season is coming to an end. So I think it's important for teams to know what's going on, what's happening going forward and for drivers too. I'm looking at all my possible options and, yeah, I cannot take too long any more."
According to the Motorsport.com, some sources have suggested that Perez's representative and Red Bull have already opened talks about the possibilities of a deal for next year.
Asked about whether or not negotiations had started, and if the team was a genuine option, Perez said: "I wouldn't rule it out. I think at the moment until they're not confirmed they are an option, you know.
"It is the same as every team that hasn't confirmed. I think, as time is running, there are very, very few opportunities to remain on the grid for next year."
