In a fight for the top spot on second row of the grid, after first runs in Q3 Dutchman found himself competing against his old team mate Daniel Ricciardo-as Aussie managed to put his Renault at P3 after the first runs.

But after the second runs of Q3 everything was back to normal for Max as he ended up third fastest and was at brisk of splitting the Mercedes perfect one-two-missing out by only 1500th of second. Anyhow, as Belgian GP is a home Grand Prix for Max, he is pleased with how weekend is panning out for the team and himself.

“Overall, it’s been a really positive weekend so far, we came here and thought it was going to be really tricky for us and actually to be that close to Valtteri and in P3 is a good result,” said the Dutchman in his post-qualifying media debrief.

Shedding light on his fastest lap of the Qualifying which saw him slot his car right behind the Mercedes driver and ahead of Ricciardo and Albon, he was overall satisfied by it and thinks it was the best he could do.

“The lap was decent and of course I always look at the fastest car and we are half a second down but I think it is the closest we have been to Mercedes in qualifying this year. For us on this track, that is not normally our type of qualifying track”

Furthermore, Max is hoping for the rain to spice up the things tomorrow in the race as race is predicated around the race time and with heavy rake on the car and his ability to drive in the wet conditions it will definitely open doors for the Austrian team.

“I think we can all be very happy with the result and now I’m looking forward to the race. I don’t think we prefer a wet or dry race but a change in weather during the race would spice things up. This track is amazing to drive in qualifying and already very exciting in the race, but if the weather comes into play a bit like last year at Hockenheim then it could be very special.”

For the race Max is confident that car is well balanced and start will provide him with opportunities the hole in the air Mercedes cars will be creating for him will come handy and he can capitalize on it.

“I’m happy with the balance of the car and we have made a good step. Now we need to hope for a good start and then we can push Mercedes hard and maximise our result again,” concluded the Dutchman
