F1 | Styrian GP | Hamilton leads home a Mercedes 1-2 as the Ferraris collide
A comfortable day for Mercedes and Hamilton as they dominate the day. Lando Norris won an epic midfield fight on the last lap.
The qualifying order from Saturday changed for the starting grid due to penalties.
- Lando Norris (P6 to P9) - overtaking under yellow flags in FP1
- Charles Leclerc (P11 to P14) - impeding Kvyat in Q2
- Antonio Giovinazzi (stays P19) - gearbox change
- Romain Grosjean (Pitlane start) - Haas breaking parc ferme rules to work on the car so the Frenchman could compete in the race
Off the line, Hamilton stayed in front of Verstappen, Sainz and Bottas. Alex Albon moved past Ocon to take 5th.
It was an early retirement for Sebastian Vettel as he got hit by teammate Charles Leclerc at turn 3. Vettel’s race was done with his rear wing heavily damaged. Leclerc retired a few laps later with too much damage following the contact.

George Russell’s great qualifying performance didn’t pay off as he made a costly error and went into the gravel whilst fighting Kevin Magnussen. It dropped him to P18.
Valtteri Bottas cleared Carlos Sainz to take P3 on lap 6, followed by Alex Albon two laps later to drop the Spaniard to 5th. Ocon, Ricciardo, Gasly, Stroll and Norris completed the top 10 on lap 10.
Sergio Perez pulled off a cracking move on lap 14 to overtake Lando Norris for P10. Stroll and Perez cleared Gasly on consecutive laps to take P8 and P9, and the AlphaTauri driver fell out of the points a few laps later when Lando Norris sailed by. Daniel Ricciardo overtook teammate Esteban Ocon for P6 on lap 20.
Unfortunately for Ocon, his race ended on lap 26 as he pulled into the pits with a problem. It moved Daniil Kvyat into the points for AlphaTauri.
At the front, Verstappen pitted on lap 25 from P2, race leader Hamilton on lap 28 and Bottas six laps after his stablemate. The top 3 remained Hamilton, Verstappen and Bottas.
In the midfield, Sainz boxed from P5 on lap 33 but had a slow stop and got jumped by Ricciardo, Stroll and Perez – the Mexican made a stunning move on the Spanish driver at turn 6 on lap 40.
Perez’s charge from P17 on the grid continued as he overtook Stroll on lap 46 and Ricciardo three laps later to move into 5th.
With 15 laps to go, Hamilton led Verstappen, Bottas, Albon, Perez, Ricciardo, Stroll, Sainz, Norris and Kvyat.
McLaren employed team orders to allow Norris ahead of Sainz.
Valtteri Bottas took P2 from Verstappen with five laps to go thanks to DRS. He had briefly taken it on the previous lap but the Dutchman made a stunning move around the outside of top 4 to briefly reclaim the position.
It all kicked off in the closing laps as Perez and Albon touched, with Perez picking up damage. Behind him, Stroll passed Ricciardo, before Norris overtook the pair of them.
With Perez struggling with a broken wing, Norris took advantage and passed the Mexican in the final corner for P5.
Hamilton cruised to the win from Bottas, Verstappen, Albon, Norris, Perez, Stroll, Sainz and Kvyat.
