Mark Webber may claim Vettel is 'empty' - but never write him off
Mark Webber tends to make headlines with his opinions. Following his latest remarks on Vettel, do not be surprised to see the 4-time F1 champion spin back into action.
Whether it be social media; a section of the public that likes to bring people down (having raised them so high); or the desire to sell newspapers, it appears more than ever that many people like to share with the world a controversial opinion. One such man who has been known for his frank comments is former Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber. For 5 years, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were teammates and the duo took Red Bull to four consecutive Constructors’ Championships. When speaking recently to the Fast Lane podcast, Webber was very clear in his opinion of the Vettel and Ferrari saga stating that "The chemistry is gone, the marriage is over.”
Mark Webber can always be relied upon to give newsworthy quotes ranging from discussing his own mortality such as:
“I was just having a shower, and thinking ‘Mate, you’re lucky to be in one piece.” as said when reflecting on his 190mph crash at the 2010 European Grand Prix.
Or even the quote:
“It’s kids isn’t it…kids with not enough experience – you do a good job and then they $#$# it all up.”
Alex Albon may have something to say about a certain 6-time F1 Drivers’ World Champion messing things up for him…but this quote from Webber refers to the Japanese GP of 2007. Having overcome food poisoning and desperately difficult wet weather racing conditions, Mark Webber was speared - under the safety car no less - by a young rookie named Sebastian Vettel. Since this day, it is fair to say no love was lost between the two men even before they became teammates. Even now, 13 years on, Webber has plenty to say about the former 4-time F1 Drivers’ World Champion:
"The chemistry is gone, the marriage is over…Sebastian is dressed in red, he’s driving a red car but he’s there for himself. In some scenarios you'd wish that it could be over now, because that's pretty much how it's looking. From a dynamic perspective, I think Sebastian was empty after the race. I think the Seb scenario, the sooner that's over, the better for everyone concerned."
Harsh words indeed from the winner of nine Formula One Grand Prix and also maybe conflicting with what many viewers saw on Sunday in Austria.
As many loyal Sebastian Vettel fan sites have shown this past week with ‘picture in picture’ posts, the SF1000 looked a nightmare to drive with Vettel expressing to Sky F1 that he was surprised he only spun once.
Close up photos clearly showed the drastic understeer and oversteer which the 4-time F1 champion had to contend with whilst driving Scuderia Ferrari’s 2020 challenger. So, for many, that was why Vettel looked so drained, or as Webber put it ‘empty’, after the race.
Unfortunately, as days pass the motorsport world learns more revelations as to the way that Scuderia Ferrari broke the news to Vettel and once again Webber also has his opinion as to the handling of this matter:
"I think it surprised most of us, Sebastian probably the most…Even the way he was told, over the phone and not making an effort to get in front of him...Clearly that relationship, or the dynamic of how that was going, wasn't healthy and they thought it was best to not continue. You can't be half-pregnant with these contracts. It's not like it was a one-year contract, or the stuff the press was trying to talk about that Sebastian was going back to them and wanting a more long-term agreement…But that wasn't even tabled. It wasn't something - Ferrari weren't even considering."
At this time, many race fans are speculating (seems to be the trend at the moment) as to what Sebastian Vettel will do next.
Will he take a sabbatical from the sport? Will he return to his farm and have time with his family? Will he focus on restoring his classic motorbikes? Well, Mark Webber thinks he knows the answer:
"I don't think it's over yet," he said. "I think he still has a chance to get something in '22. Who knows, maybe '21 at Red Bull? I think he needs to get the energy and re-invent himself and de-Maranello his mind, in terms of trying to get that energy back. It's just slowly spiralled in a downward cycle with his relationship with Ferrari. I think it's a bit early [to talk legacies]. We can chat about that when the day comes. I think he's still going to be on the grid in the future, whether it's '22 or '21. I think he's still got a bit left in him."
Sebastian Vettel turned 33 years of age last Friday, so certainly no longer the kid he once was in Webber’s eyes. In his F1 racing career to date he has won 53 Grand Prix at 21 different race circuits around the world as well as his 4 F1 Drivers’ World Championships.
Sebastian Vettel has a great deal to give to Formula One and I for one would not be surprised to see his resurgence this weekend at the Styrian Grand Prix - whether Scuderia Ferrari manage many upgrades or not.
The world of social media loves to have an opinion, which is probably another reason Sebastian Vettel has chosen to not join it. Vettel tends to do his talking on the track so write him off at your peril. However, if he does choose to leave F1 for good at the end of the season – you can be sure that the pinnacle of motorsport will miss its youngest ever Formula One Drivers’ World Champion.
