Verstappen has to wait until the Austrian GP to get back on track
The Dutch talent must wait until the first race in 2020 to drive again a Formula 1 car after the lockdown period.
Red Bull decided to use one of its filming days one Thursday at Silverstone, to start again the development of the 2020 car.
Besides, the tests have helped the team in improving their understanding of the security protocols that will apply during the closed-door events at the beginning of the season.
Although Red Bull would have preferred having both the drivers present, only Alexander Albon ran the RB16. Due to the mandatory 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving from abroad, Verstappen did not manage to arrange a flight from its home in Monaco.
Indeed, Verstappen would have moved in the UK in the first week of June to join the tests, as sports stars are not exempted from self-isolation of two weeks in case of arrival from other countries.
The restrictions, alongside the fact that the filming day is limited to 100 km, led Red Bull to go ahead with the tests without Verstappen.
Other teams have already conducted tests following the lockdown. Mercedes had a test with the 2018 car, as Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas managed to return to the UK before the compulsory quarantine came into force. Similarly, Ferrari carried out a test at Mugello with its two drivers.
According to the current F1 regulations, teams are allowed to take 2018 cars to a foreign track or a multi-day test. However, Red Bull was running on Renault power units two years ago, and it would have been difficult to arrange a test with its former partner.
Instead, Red Bull has the chance to run tests with the 2020 car, but with the limit of 100 km. Given, the extremely short length of the filming day, the absence is not disadvantageous for Verstappen.
