Yesterday Alex Zanardi, a former Formula 1 driver, was involved in a serious road accident in the province of Siena.

The accident occurred during one of the stages of the "Obiettivo Tricolore" race in which the participants are Paralympic athletes participating in handbikes, Olympic wheelchairs or bikes.

The accident that involved him occurred when Zanardi was preparing to reach the end of the stage, in the municipality of Pienza, in the province of Siena.

The coach of the national team, Mario Valentini, was a witness and spoke about what had happened by saying: "It happened on a straight downhill. Just before the road makes a slight curve and Alex slightly invaded the other lane just as the truck tried to steer without being able to avoid the impact".

The former driver was urgently transported to the university hospital of Santa Maria alle Scotte in Siena.

Alex Zanardi underwent a three-hour neurosurgery yesterday evening and was subsequently transferred to intensive care with stable metabolic and hemodynamic parameters. In addition, he underwent a maxillofacial surgery regarding the trauma to his face and head.

His state of health remains in very serious conditions and at the moment the ex F1 driver "is intubated and supported by artificial ventilation while the neurological picture remains serious".

In addition to the dynamics of the accident, investigations are focusing on how the stage was carried out which involved the participation of a dozen disabled runners. The due checks must be made regarding the organization of the event and in particular on security permits.
