The conditions of Alex Zanardi are serious, the ex Formula 1 driver was involved in a road accident in the province of Siena, during one of the stages of the race “Obiettivo tricolore”. This is a tour in which the participants are the Paralympic athletes that run in handbikes, bikes or Olympic wheelchairs.

The accident occurred at 17pm along the highway 146 in the municipality of Pienza, on the road leading to San Quirico d'Orcia. From what has been told, a heavy vehicle is involved, and according to a first reconstruction, Zanardi may have slightly invaded the lane where there was the truck.

The helicopter rescued Alex Zanardi in the place of the incident, to bring him to the Le Scotte hospital in Siena. The former Formula 1 driver was in Val d'Orcia for one of the stages of the tricolor relay of "Obiettivo Tricolore", a project to help disabled athletes top be able to do sport, which sees among the participants many Paralympic athletes in handbikes or Olympic wheelchairs.

From what is told by the few people that were in the place of the incident, Zanardi has reported a polytrauma and is now at the Le Scotte hospital in Siena.

The accident occurred when Alex Zanardi was a few kilometers from the end of today's stage scheduled in Montalcino. The witness Mario Valentini, the national team coach who followed the group on a bus, explained what happened.

"It happened on a straight downhill”, said Mario Valentini. “Just before the road makes a slight curve and Alex slightly invaded the other lane just as the truck tried to steer without being able to avoid the impact".
