The V6 power units have been in the sport since the beginning of the 2014 season. However, things look set to change when 2025 arrives with the introduction of new engine regulations.  

RaceFans today reported that Formula 1 is planning on gradually limiting power unit developments, leading to a complete halt to any kind of development by 2023. In previous years, each design had to be homologated for a single season. With these new rules, this means that some specifications can be used for more than one season.  

The four power unit manufacturers will be permitted to introduce a new engine, turbo and MGU-H once per year from 2021-2023. The specification will be frozen for the following seasons.  

However, there will be much bigger restrictions when it comes to the MGU-K, energy store and control electronics. RaceFans wrote that they’ll be allowed a new design for each of these before the end of 2021, and a new one covering 2022 and 2023, before they get completely frozen, too.  

The teams will need to make sure any changes to the power unit does not affect how they are installed within their chassis’.  

Gradually freezing development on these parts will help all the power unit manufacturers to save a substantial amount of money and ease the financial worries they face thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the world this year.  

RaceFans added that these plans have been sent to the teams and they should get the seal of approval later this week.
