Three more races could be cancelled due to Coronavirus
The Dutch, Canadian and Singapore Grands Prix are likely to be called off. The first one because they don't want to keep it behind closed doors, the other two because they require an excessive number of people to be organized.
To date, the Grand Prix of Australia, Monaco and France have been officially cancelled due to the Coronavirus epidemic.
Formula 1 is in constant contact with the GP host countries, to adapt the Circus calendar to the restrictions and prohibitions in force in the various states to limit the spread of the virus.
Liberty Media is also in continuous negotiations with all the circuit venues, with the organizers of certain GPs who expect to be paid even for closed-doors races.
In the meantime, Hockenheim, for example, is waiting to find out if a race will take place or not in Germany. The German GP was not scheduled at the beginning of the season, but nevertheless it could be reinstated if problems arise with other events.
However, Singapore and Montreal also seem close to a definitive cancellation, since the first is a street circuit and the other is an event that historically always requires many workers to be organized.
The Dutch GP then, scheduled in Zandvoort, seems have the same destiny. Adding to that, the organizers are not inclined to run their race behind closed doors due to local restrictions. Rather, as a Dutch GP source pointed out, they prefer to postpone it to 2021.
"So far it looks like our 2020 race will be postponed to 2021, hopefully when there is a vaccine and business as the ‘new’ usual”, said a Dutch GP source to Motorsport.com.
Even the Formula 1 teams are not still aware of the official GP calendar, since especially the second half of the revised season is still all a work in progress.
A potential calendar for this 2020 season we assume could be, on balance, the following:
