Following the confirmation that Sebastian Vettel will leave Ferrari in 2021, a domino effect occurred in the Formula 1 driver market. Indeed, Daniel Ricciardo announced is move from Renault to Mclaren, while Carlos Sainz will join Ferrari with a two-year contract from 2021.

In the aftermath of these driver transfers, Renault has an empty seat for 2021. Reports about Alonso coming back to the Enstone team have immediately spread. Renault and the Spaniard have added spicy to the voices with few tweets suggesting the return.

Marca claims that Renault is close to signing Alonso to replace Ricciardo. According to the Spanish newspaper, Alonso is the marquee name to realize Renault’s ambitions to compete for the championship. However, the high wage requirements by the two time Formula 1 world champion, would refrain Renault from finalizing the deal. Indeed, Alonso earned $30m in the last season with McLaren, almost twice as much as the $17m Renault pays to Ricciardo.

There could be a solution if Liberty Media steps in and support Alonso in the deal. Marca reports that Liberty Media is happy to have the Spaniard back, and it is willing to pay a significant amount of his salary.

An agreement could be reached before the 2020 season starts in Austria. This could be the third trip for Alonso with Renault, following the two championships in 2005-2006 and his comeback in 2008-2009.
