The Azerbaijan GP has been postponed due to the ongoing spread of Coronavirus
The Azerbaijan GP will not take place on June 7th, as promoters announced on Monday morning. However, all purchased tickets remain valid.
The Azerbaijan GP has been officially postponed as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. F1 confirmed the news on Monday morning.
The event was set to take place on June 7th as the season opener, as the first seven races of 2020 were called off.
It was just a matter of time before the news became official, as further omens surfaced last week, when FIA Accredited media were denied the visa to enter the country.
“The postponement was agreed upon after extensive discussions with Formula 1 as well as the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Government of the Azerbaijan Republic” reads the statement issued by the Baku City Circuit.
“This comes as a direct result of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and has been based entirely on the expert guidance provided to us by the relevant authorities”.
“In coming to this conclusion, BCC’s primary concern throughout has been the health and well-being of the Azerbaijani people as well as all visiting F1 fans, staff and championship participants”.
It is understood that the promoters of the Azerbaijan GP are willing to reschedule the event, as its tickets will remain valid without any additional formality.
“BCC shares its fans disappointment at not being able to experience the pinnacle of motorsport race through the streets of Baku this June. To that end, we will continue to work closely with Formula 1, the FIA and the Government of the Azerbaijan Republic to monitor the situation with a view to announcing a new race date later in the 2020 season.”
The Canadian GP would hypothetically host the first race of the 2020 campaign, which already appears highly unlikely. In fact the decision of pulling out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics might also jeopardize the feasibility of the Grand Prix in Montreal.
