F1 confirms the postponement of the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix
Three more races are added to the COVID-19 bulletin. However, F1 and the FIA assure that they will closely monitor the situation to eventually reschedule the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix later in the year.
As predicted, three more F1 Grands Prix are officially postponed. The Dutch GP, the Spanish GP and the Monaco GP will not take place in May, validating the rumours that would see the Azerbaijan GP as the first race of the 2020 season.
Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, the current F1 season took a dramatic turn last week in Melbourne as a McLaren team member tested positive to the disease on Thursday, triggering the cancellation of the season opener and consequently the postponement of the Bahrain and the Vietnam GP.
Important decisions concerning the future of F1 and its 2021 regulations are set to be taken this week, as the FIA will closely monitor the situation "to study the viability of potential alternative dates for each GP later in the year".
"In view of the continued global spread of COVID-19 and after ongoing discussions with the FIA and the three promoters it has today been confirmed that the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix 2020, Formula 1 Gran Premio De España 2020 and Formula 1 Grand Prix De Monaco 2020 will be postponed" reads F1's press release.
"Due to the ongoing and fluid nature of the COVID-19 situation globally, Formula 1, the FIA and the three promoters have taken these decisions in order to ensure the health and safety of the travelling staff, championship participants and fans, which remains our primary concern".
