Constructive work of the FIA and F1 drivers on the 2021 regulations
Formula 1 drivers shared their opinion about working with the FIA on the new rules of the championship.
Every few years, when the FIA changed the technical and sports regulations of the championship, this case usually occurs without the participation of the main persons of the championship - the drivers. However, after much criticism from the drivers’ side this tear and disagreement in many aspects of the regulations for the season-2021, the Federation took into account their opinion and join them to the solution of important issues.
Therefore, now the drivers actively involved in the process of making the rules. This year, the drivers were given representation in working groups to discuss the regulations, and during the Russian Grand Prix F1 leaders Chase Carey and Ross Brown met with them, showing them the developments on new cars.
The Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was one of the critics of the new regulations, and said that people from the FIA never sat in Formula 1 car, and because of this they don’t have necessary knowledge and even feelings to make the rules of the championship. Now, when the driver can participate in the process, his attitude has changed significantly and he is happy with the cooperation with the FIA.
"It’s been a huge step for us to be involved, it’s a big step for all the drivers to be united. We’re building a new and better relationship with the FIA, and I think they’ve been quite open," - Lewis told.
Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas is also pleased the F1 leaders began to ask the opinion of the drivers.
"The fact that they are now sharing ideas with us is a good start," - Bottas said.
"We are well versed in matters of racing and are always happy to share an opinion. We understand better than anyone how to make racing better. This means that the fans will be more satisfied."
The Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc agreed with Bottas.
"It is very important that we all come together with common goals," - the Monegasque said.
"We have simple ideas and it's important that we get involved."
As for technical part, the developments of new cars caused Hamilton to be optimistic, as they should be better able to handle pursuit and overtaking.
"There are things that we ask about and they are like 'we can’t change it now'… but there’s no such thing as 'can’t’ for an engineer'," - Lewis thinks.
"There’s lots of things that can be improved but the thing they did show us the other day is that the amount that you lose behind a car today and what their simulations say that we will lose in terms of downforce behind the new car. I think it looks great, so I’m working as hard as I can to make sure I can stay around for then and get to drive those newer cars," - the driver said.
