Singapore GP | Verstappen: "Lewis is quick but we are competitive as well"
After having led the moring session, Max Verstappen has a solid second practice regariding both race-pace and qualifying simulation. The Ducthman is therefore happy with the job done and now focuses on tomorrow's qualifying.
There's a reasonably small gap between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen on the timing screen at the end of the Singapore's FP2 session. The fastest lap, set on the soft compound of tyres, belongs to the Mercedes' driver on a time of 1:38.773.
0.184" away is Max Verstappen, that holds second place overall. A satisfying friday for the Dutchman that previously topped the first session, 167 thousands clear of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel that sitted in P2.
If in the morning Mercedes were an unknown, due to their choice of using hard tyres instead of the red-painted ones, Lewis Hamilton in the Singapore's night looked unreachable in particular on the race-pace: "Lewis [Hamilton] has been really quick today but we are competitive too. We've had a great day: we tried new components on the car and they worked out well" stated the Red Bull driver.
The #33 was arguably the main threat to Hamilton's leadership on the race simulation: despite Charles Leclerc's solid pace on the medium tyres, Red Bull chose to put the Dutchman on a hard compound, making any comparison difficult. The decision was forced by the team's choice of bringing just one set of medium rubber for the Singapore's weekend.
Verstappen has anyway performed solidly also on the white-painted tyres. Still, he admits his focus is now on tomorrow's qualifying session: "The starting position here makes 95% of the job so we have to make sure we do our best tomorrow. I'm overall happy so far, I feel positive for the rest of the weekend."

One last proof of Verstappen's great friday comes from poor team-mate's performances: Alex Albon, after running wide twice and breaking his front wing, has constantly been outscored by one second thoughout the enirety of the day. This means that, if the #33 Red Bull car looks perfectly setted, something has to be fixed on the other side of the garage before saturday's qualifying.
