One year ago in Singapore
Ferrari's failure, Ocon's collision with the teammate and Hamilton's victory – let’s remember the Singapore Grand Prix 2018.
The Singapore Grand Prix has always been one of the special in the Formula 1 calendar. City circuit, complex configuration, night race – all this makes it exciting and beautiful, which confirms the fact that since 2008, no one Singapore race hasn’t been held without safety car.
Last year's race was no exception, it's also remembered by fans unexpected accidents, beautiful fights and interesting strategic games between the teams.
Despite winnings in 2016 and 2017 years, Mercedes can’t be called absolute favorites of the Singapore stage. At one time Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel, who even is often called as the King of Singapore, were very strong there. The driver has 4 wins in his arsenal: 3 with Red Bull and 1 with Ferrari. Vettel also has strong performances in Saturday's qualifying there: there are 4 poles on his account, the last of which was set by Sebastian in 2017.
However, last year Mercedes really shone in Singapore. Lewis Hamilton earned the pole position and then on Sunday converted it into the victory. But on a par with the triumphant performance of Lewis, his teammate Valtteri Bottas was left far behind. On Saturday he took the 4th place, and on Sunday remained on it, unable to improve the results.
Scuderia Ferrari literally lost power and speed on its cars that weekend. In qualifying Sebastian Vettel managed to take 3rd place, while Kimi Raikkonen was located on the 5th position. On Sunday both drivers retained their positions.
One of the favorites of the Singapore Grand Prix Red Bull team with the help of its driver won the 9th Singapore podium in a row. At the race start, Max lost the position to Sebastian Vettel, but thanks to the excellent strategy of the team, Verstappen returned to second position after a brilliant pit stop.
One of the highlights of the race was the collision between Racing Point drivers on the first lap. From the beginning of the weekend the drivers showed excellent results, which spoke about the speed and pace of the cars. But at the start teammates collided, and Esteban Ocon dropped out of the race. Sergio Perez was different strange behavior during that racer: after a collision with Ocon, he abruptly cut Sergei Sirotkin, pulling the wheel in his direction, due to what there was contact, and Perez got punctured tires. Moreover, the driver received a penalty for dangerous actions – go through the pit lane.
As for this year, there is no doubt all three teams will be strong here.
First of all, Ferrari. After their incredible speed in Monza, there is no doubt that they are able to perform even better on the track that suits them. Second, Red Bull. This team has always been strong on the Singapore track, and if the team doesn’t face technical problems, especially engine problems, then Red Bull and Max have every chance to win there. And, of course, Mercedes. This team can surprise us this weekend – both with its incredible speed and incredible loss of it. City track isn’t particularly suitable Mercedes cars, but still the last few years Lewis won Singapore GP. Therefore, it’s fair to say that the success of Mercedes will depend on the work of their rivals – if Ferrari and Red Bull work without mistakes and don’t face technical difficulties, then Mercedes will be difficult to achieve a victory.
