Despite conquering the first point of the season for Williams this year, the future of Robert Kubica is clouded in uncertainty. The Grove-based outfit seems to be leaning towards Canadian F2 driver Nicholas Latifi, who joined the team earlier this year in a developmental role.

From failing to build the FW42 in time for the beginning of pre-season testing to stably fighting for P19 and P20 throughout the first part of the season, Williams hit rock bottom with its troubles in 2019. It was supposed to be a relaunch year, to get payback and start developing onwards and upwards featuring an all-new line-up. Instead, George Russell and the returning Robert Kubica found themselves struggling and fighting against their own cars, at the very bottom of the field without even hoping to get any further on the grid.

In spite of such a poor and dreadful display, George Russell managed to showcase his talent by outqualifying his experienced teammate from Melbourne to Budapest. The Briton demolished Kubica on a disarming 12-0, nearing the access to Q2 in Hungary. Such a blatantly important achievement cannot remain unnoticed, as Williams is currently evaluating whether this year’s line-up should be confirmed for 2020. Performance, consistency and a global assessment would favour the British rookie, although the profound faith Polish sponsors have in Robert Kubica might save the F1 veteran from being thrown out of the Circus.

However, results are not on his side and Williams is clearly looking around, seeking alternatives. But as you know, it is not needed to look too far away from home, as Nicholas Latifi might embody the perfect candidate for Williams. A promising driver who would grant the team a significant flow of income is exactly what the team at Grove needs, as financial struggles are still part of its main difficulties at the moment. Rumours would suggest that Latifi’s move to Williams is worth 30 million dollars, a sum that would eventually staunch the team’s troubles in terms of funds.

According to German newspaper Blick, the deal between Williams and Latifi appears to be already done, hinting at Kubica’s exit from F1 despite a slight interest from Haas. In fact, the American team is on the verge of changing its 2020 line-up and seems to be interested in an experienced figure to guide the team. Both Kubica and Latifi's destinies are, however, entwined. With Kubica's potential move to Kannapolis, Latifi would be welcomed at Williams without needing to embark on an oval-related experience to secure an effective career move in motorsport. Being the son of Michael Latifi, who became a shareholder of the McLaren Group, the F2 driver appears to be on the shortlist of the Woking-based IndyCar outfit for a seat, now that the British constructor announced its full-time comeback in the American series.
