Jamie Chadwick is the first woman that has won the W Series and she’s one step closer to jump into Formula 1. The British driver was proclaimed champion last Sunday in Brands Hatch.

Previously, the new championship was criticized because all the drivers must be woman. The creation of this serial was very polemic but as it progressed, it caught the attention of the media and fans around the world. The championship was introduced with 18 female drivers, in which 5 of them are from Great Britain, and 7 races (6 scoring and 1 non-scoring). The first round was set in Hockenheim, Germany; the next round was in Zolder, Belgium; the third one as in the Misano World Circuit in Italy, the fourth one was set again in Germany but this time in Norisring, the fifth round and the non-scoring race were set in the Assen Circuit in The Netherlands and the final round of the championship was in Brands Hatch.

Chadwick became champion by winning 2 races and 5 podiums. She finished with 110 points, 10 more than the second place of Beitske Visser. In the last race, Jamie was starting on pole, but she wasn’t able to achieve a podium, even though she had a lot of fans supporting her because Brands Hatch is a circuit in Britain. She finished on P4, while Alice Powell, also British, won the race.

Jamie wants to be the first woman in more than four decades to race with men in Formula 1. She’s aware in how difficult the challenge is, but she is determined to achieve it. Nowadays, she has a contract with Aston Martin and apart of winning the W Series, she won 500,000 dollars. She says that it isn’t enough as to get into Formula 1, you need much more money, either by sponsors, teams or personal money.

“It will be difficult, that’s how the sport is, but I hope that this championship has put me in the best position to make it happen. If you look to the drivers that have made it into F1, all of them had a significant financial support.” Said the W Series’ champion.

If she achieves it, it could be an inspiration for other girls who want to jump into F1. There’s another female driver that could make the big step, her name is Tatiana Calderón and at the present time, she’s in Formula 2. The fight to be the “first” woman in Formula 1 has started. In conclusion, the purpose of the W Series is to prepare the female drivers to drive with men at upper categories. In my opinion, it was a very good idea and from what I see, the fans are also enjoying it.
