French GP | Lewis Hamilton comfortably wins at Paul Ricard
It was another comfortable day at the office for the reigning champions. The main fights came in the midfield between Norris, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg.
Off the line, Hamilton got away superbly and maintained the lead from Bottas, Leclerc and Verstappen. Sainz jumped Norris in the battle for 5th. The soft tyre runners – Gasly and Giovinazzi – jumped Ricciardo.
Alex Albon was the biggest loser on the opening lap as he lost five places and dropped from P11 to P16.
Sergio Perez got hit with a 5-second penalty after gaining an advantage off the track on the first lap.
Sebastian Vettel overtook both McLarens in the early stages using DRS to move up into P5.
As expected, Giovinazzi quickly lost grip on the soft tyre and lost places to the Renaults and Raikkonen before he pitted at the end of lap 7.
Haas’ recent struggles continued and Kevin Magnussen got gobbled up by both Toro Rosso drivers. Daniil Kvyat’s stunning overtake around the outside of T10 a real highlight of the race.
Ricciardo tried an undercut on Gasly and it failed. However, the Australian managed to get him with DRS on much warmer tyres down the long straight.
Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Verstappen and Vettel all pitted before the halfway point and easily stayed in the top 5 positions. Behind them, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Stroll followed at half distance – all three running long after starting on the hard compound.
It worked well for the Finn and German. They both managed to overcut Pierre Gasly to be P9 and P10.
At the front, Hamilton cruised to the win. He thoroughly outpaced team-mate Valtteri Bottas and took yet another dominant win. Behind the Mercedes’, Charles Leclerc took a very solid 3rd place in the Ferrari.
Max Verstappen, Vettel, Sainz, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Norris completed the points scorers.
An amazing fight for 7th on the final lap saw Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg overtake Lando Norris.
Ferrari pitted Sebastian Vettel on the penultimate lap and he took the fastest lap point on the final tour. Hamilton leads the standings by 36 points following this race.
