Andrea Iannone tops Warm Up ahead of today’s Gran Premio D’Italia Oakley.

For the first time since Motegi 2016 and the 65th time in his career, home hero Valentino Rossi qualified on pole position for today’s Italian Grand Prix. In his 64 previous pole positions, Rossi went on to win 41 of those Grand Prix, and stood on the podium at 55; Rossi’s last win on home soil was at Misano in 2014. Rossi has the greatest success rate across all classes at Mugello, with a total of 9 victories, today he will be aiming to finish within the top 5 to reach the milestone of becoming the first competitor to score 5000 points in the premier class. Jorge Lorenzo lines up alongside Rossi, this will be his 4th front row start on the Ducati. Maverick Viñales completes the front row, after battling through Q1, this is his 2nd front row start this season. Andrea Iannone starts from 4th position for today’s race, he will be aiming to become the first Suzuki race winner at Mugello since Kevin Schwantz in 1992. Marc Marquez will start from 6th position, his teammate Dani Pedrosa will start from 20th position on the grid, his worst qualifying since he stepped up to the class in 2006. Franco Morbidelli will start his maiden home grand prix from 12th on the grid, making him the first of this year’s rookies to advance to Q2.

Andrea Iannone topped the warm up session with a time of 1:47:080, Marquez followed closely in 2nd with a time of 1:47:339, Dovizioso rounded out the top 3 with a time of 1:47:398.

Top Yamaha was Maverick Viñales in 4th with a time of 1:47:541. Home hero Rossi set a time of 1:47:740 placing him 7th. Johann Zarco appeared to struggle in this morning session, only managing a time of 1:48:594 and 19th position.

After a disastrous qualifying session Pedrosa placed 8th in this morning’s warm up session, with a time of 1:47:782.

Top KTM was Pol Espargaro with a time of 1:48:207, placing him 15th.  Smith set a time of 1:48:614 placing him 20th.

Top Aprillia was Aleix Espargaro, setting a time of 1:47:834 placing him 9th.

Top Rookie was Hafizh Syahrin in 12th position with a time of 1:48:017.

Despite a recent injury at a testing session in Barcelona, Tito Rabat has qualified 13th for today’s race, and managed 18th in this morning’s standings, with a time of 1:48:543

The weather for the Italian Grand Prix looks to remain sunny, with partial cloud cover and highs of 27ºC.
