#QatarGP | Fernandez Leads Day 1 in the Desert.

Raul Fernandez topped this afternoon’s time sheets, ahead of Darryn Binder and Sergio Garcia. This afternoon’s sessions remained bright and blisteringly hot, as the Moto3 World Championship got underway for their first session of 2020.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Raul Fernandez topped the timesheets with a time of 2’04.577. just 0.121s quicker than CIP Green Power’s Darryn Binder, who set a time of 2’04.698. Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Sergio Garcia rounded out the top 3, with a time of 2’04.723.

Ogura impressed finishing the opening day just 0.345s off the quickest time, placing him 4th with a time of 2’04.922. Last year’s race winner, Toba, placed 5th, with a fastest lap of 2’04.988. Arbolino, who showed himself as a rising star during the 2019 season, set a time of 2’05.227, leaving him 6th at the end of day 1.

2020’s first crasher, Migno, set a time of 2’05.287, ending his day 1 efforts in 7th, a positive start to his 2020 campaign. Masia began his 2020 season with a fastest lap time of 2’05.332, placing him 8th. A previous star of the Moto3 class, Fenati, who steps back down to the Moto3 class after a stint in Moto2, set a time of 2’05.348, placing him 9th.

Moto3 rookie, and the youngest competitor this year, Öncü impressed on his debut at Qatar, with a fastest lap of 2’05.355 which placed him 10th. The oldest competitor on this year’s Moto3 grid, McPhee set a time of 2’05.383 placing him 11th. Vietti managed to set a fastest lap of 2’05.502, fast enough to place him 12th.

Moto3 rookies Kunii and Tatay rounded out the top 14, with Kunii placing 13th setting a time of 2’05.587. Whilst Tatay posted a time of 2’05.598, just 1.021s off the fastest lap of the day.

After tomorrow’s FP3 session the fastest 14 riders will advance directly to Q2, whilst the remainder of the field will compete through Q1 for a spot in Q2.
