Robin Frijns set the fastest in the first practice session ahead of today’s opening 2019-20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship EPrix at Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.
 
The Envision Virgin Racing driver managed to set a time of 1:16.137 during a twice red flag interrupted 45-minute session to put his Audi e-tron FE06 in the lead.
 
The second-fastest time on the Saudi track was GEOX Dragon driver Nico Muller who’s late session time was just 1.264 seconds.
 
Sam Bird managed to be third in the other Envision Virgin Racing entry just ahead of Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne’s Mercedes.
 
Nissan edams’ Sebastien Buemi placed fifth, while Antonio Felix Da Costa sixth in his first appearance with DS Techeetah in the sixth season of Formula E.
 
Pascal Wehrlein triggered a Full Course Yellow in the opening moments of the session when he stopped and then re-booted his Mahindra M6ELECTRO.
 
Wehrlein then stopped a further two times then retired to the pit garage as the team investigated the persistent problem that saw him unable to post a representative time.
 
The first FP1 red flag was when Ma Qinghua collided with a wall and damaged the front and rear of his NIO333 car on his out lap.
 
And the second red flag was brought by Brendon Hartley, who is making his debut in Formula E this season with his team GEOX Dragon, he crashed his car Penske EV-4 at the T2/T3.
 
The second free practice session is scheduled to be underway at 9 a.m. local time.
