Since the ownership change and rebranding, the now Aston Martin has taken quite some steps forward in their quest to become title contenders: from the building of a new facility to headhunting top engineers.

Ahead of the unveiling of their new single-seater, Lance Stroll has shared his thoughts on the progress himself and the team have been making.

“I think experience is always a great thing. As you get to gain more experience and grow as a driver, improve on some of your weaknesses,” he said in a session with media including Motorlat.

“I'm just working on my craft and understanding how I can get more out of myself: managing tyres in qualifying, setting up the car, giving myself the tools that I need from the car to strap the most out of myself.”

As he is about to begin his 6th season in Formula 1, Stroll feels that the experience he has gained since joining the grid with Williams back in 2017 is quite valuable.

“I definitely feel that with experience I have a better idea of what’s limiting you with the car, what exactly to look for and pinpoint what is the problem.”

Better understanding that is key to maximise the potential of the car, in such a high talented and skilled environment where every little detail makes a significant difference.

“I think in junior formulas the competition was just not the same. You jump in the car and drive faster than other people and that kinda works, but when you get to Formula 1 everyone is at a really high level and they have all been the best in their junior careers and they have all won in the junior careers,” he commented.

“Formula 1 is more about focusing on all the other things around you that can give you performance, to set up the car, mechanical balance set-ups, air balance set-ups, getting the tyres in the right window, managing tyres as well as possible giving yourself every advantage that you can possibly have.”

“I think learning more and more about that every year and having a better understanding of the things to look for to find speed is very important.”

Growth and excitement are key in a team so full of new additions.

“As a team we're going to grow with time. There is a lot of talented people that are very excited about this project Aston Martin F1,” said Stroll.

“We see a lot of people that are really new to the team and haven't had a chance to make an impact yet, but I think that all the people coming on board, the new factory, our partners that have joined us and are giving us all the tools and giving us an opportunity with all the people and personnel coming on board to really grow as a team.”

“It's a long-term vision but hopefully eventually we will really fight up front, challenge for race wins and championships.”

“I think every year there is gonna be steps and I hope this year we are gonna make a step, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen overnight,” he explained.

“I can’t give an answer on the time frame of how well we progress every season, because it’s sports and there is always an unknown factor in sports.”

An unpredictability that is at the heart of the sport.

“That’s why we go compete because we never know how we are gonna do and how everyone else is gonna do and that’s what makes it exciting. It’s not written down in a book how many positions we are gonna gain every season, it’s not calculated mathematically,” he continued.

“But all I can say is that it’s very exciting to see the changes that are being made, the people that are coming on board. The future looks very bright and very exciting.”
