According to technical regulations, all competitors must ensure that a 1.0 litre fuel sample can be taken from their car at any time during the event. But the Aston Martin driver will suffer this severe penalty after race officials were only able to take 0.3 litres from his car after the race.

“The team was given several opportunities to attempt to remove the required amount of fuel from the tank, however it was only possible to pump 0.3 litres out,” they said in an official statement.

“The stewards determine to apply the standard penalty for technical infringements. “Therefore they took into account that it shall be no defence to claim that no performance advantage was obtained.”

This decision has an impact for the rest of the drivers; Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is promoted to second place, having Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz closing the podium scorers. The rest of the drivers also gain a place each, having Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen promoted to P10, the last spot for points scorers.

With the promotion to P2 from Lewis Hamilton, the reigning champion picks 18 points to Verstappen’s two, extending his title lead over Max by a further two points.
