Sergio Pérez started the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, his second race with Red Bull Racing, in the front row, alongside champion Lewis Hamilton, but that unfortunately did not last the whole race or got better. The Mexican driver had a disappointing race and ended up feeling sorry for the team after committing a couple of mistakes that cost them championship points.

"In the beginning it was very difficult conditions, I did struggle," he said about the difficulty of putting the intermediate tyres of his RB16B into an ideal temperature. "I even lost it under the safety car, I got a penalty for that".

The 10-second penalty came after Perez went out of track and on his way back overtook a couple of cars that have gotten ahead of him while the safety car was still on track.

After the red flag, Checo found himself in P4 and looked set to have a shot at a podium finish until he spun out at the Villeneuve chicane. He recovered to P12 but got stuck in a DRS train behind Raikkonen and couldn't gain any more spots due to that.

"In the end we went onto the soft. We probably had a bit too much flap, I touched the wet side."

"It was a bit tricky to drive and I just lost the car. That was my mistake", Checo admitted to the mistake that cost him various places.

But the unexpected results did not take a toll on the Mexican driver's confidence:

"Well, let's take the positives. Let's come back stronger. Let's keep working really hard together with the team. Today I'm just very very sorry for the team."
