Montezemolo disapproves Ferrari’s decision on Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel’s early sacking has provided Ferrari with criticism from all over the Formula 1 world. The latest big name to be added to the list is former president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.

The current crisis Ferrari is trying to handle is besieging Maranello at every corner. Some issues already opened a breach in the wall, others may soon join the party.
The most concerning factor is that at least one of those threats is self inflicted, and that’s the management of Sebastian Vettel.
The four time world champion, and former Scuderia’s silver bullet, has been sacked before the 2020 season even took off. Last May Ferrari announced Carlos Sainz to replace the German for the 2021 championship.

According to Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, former Ferrari’s president, the situation that is going to generate from this early break up represents a critical issue the Scuderia will have to face.
In an interview with TopSpeedBlog.it, di Montezemolo said he “would have never cut Vettel so far in advance”.
The consequences of this decision are indeed affecting both the sides of the garage: “Too much pressure has been put on Leclerc and it is difficult to involve Vettel in constructive talks since he will be leaving.”

The German already proved not to be willing to pretend in orfer to protect the team, as in the very first press conference of the year he stripped Ferrari naked of the fairy-tale they were telling. “The announcement caught me by surprise -Vettel stated- as they haven’t even offered me a contract”. This way the #5 told the world that the “consensual separation” between the two parts, as Ferrari had previously described it, was nothing but a lie.
Furthermore the Scuderia will now have to decide between providing Seb with full information during the current season (with the risk of him then exporting it to another team next year) or not, giving up the helpful support Sebastian could provide.

On a longer term view, Montezemolo is also concerned about the amount of focus this situation is taking away from 2022, when the rulebook is set to be rewritten: “I am very worried because it will not be easy to get out of this situation also because we should already be working on 2022 when everything changes.”
