Mercedes has dominated the 2019 championship so far. With four consecutive one-twos over the first four races, the Silver Arrows have obtained an extraordinary and outstanding result in Formula 1. Valtteri Bottas, after two seasons as a sparring partner, is currently leading by one point the championships, challenging the five-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Toto Wolff has admitted that such start of the season reminds him of the battle between Hamilton and Rosberg, culminated in an intense rivalry and several track-flashpoints. Wolff is confident that he will be able to manage the dispute between the Mercedes pairs. Nevertheless, he warned the team has to avoid a new Hamilton-Rosberg, as Ferrari, with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, is still competing for the championship.

“It reminds me a little bit of that situation” Wolff told about Bottas and Hamilton’s start to the 2019 campaign.

“You have two drivers that have the ambition and the ability to win a championship and it’s up to us, together with them, to be very aware of that situation and remember that very quickly Vettel or [Leclerc could be back into the game.

“We mustn’t be carried away with the four first results. There's 21 races to do.

“And definitely the relationship matters in order to avoid what we went through between Nico and Lewis.

“We are lucky that they have a very good relationship,” Wolff added.

“They get on with each other, there is not a lot of games in the background. And I’m very happy about that.

"Both of the drivers have an ambition to win the championship. We want them to be feisty in the car, lions in the car, so you can't expect the behaviour of a sheep.

"But the respect needs to stay in there and we're very strong as a team and we wouldn't allow a relationship between drivers to deteriorate to a point where it has a negative effect on the team.

“If that would ever be the case, again after Nico and Lewis we would issue yellow and red cards.”
